Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway electric locomotive with a goods train at Aintree, Merseyside, 25 September 1912.
The Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway carried out electrification experiments at Aintree Sorting Sidings, as part of its plans to electrify the line between Manchester and Leeds. Trains were hauled by an electric locomotive, based on the frames of a 2-4-2 steam engine. The electric locomotive, nicknamed 'The Beetle' could pick up current from either overhead wires or a conductor rail.
The Manchester to Leeds electrification scheme was abandoned, but the Lancashire & Yorkshire Railway pressed ahead with its plans to electrify lines around Manchester, and commenced its Bury electric service in 1916.
